Parenting Payment is Centrelink's income-support payment for principal carers of young children. It pays significantly more than JobSeeker — $1,080.50/fortnight ($28,093/year) for single parents whose youngest is under 8, and $719/fortnight each for partnered claimants whose youngest is under 6.
If you're a single parent of a child under 8 and currently on JobSeeker, you're on the wrong payment — swap to Parenting Payment for about $6,000 more per year, with a lighter income taper and lighter mutual obligations.
Verified against Services Australia — Parenting Payment as at 25 July 2026. Rates index twice a year (20 March and 20 September) — verify with Services Australia for the absolute current figure before relying on it.

Are you a single parent of a kid under 8 currently on JobSeeker? Switch to PP. The move is often just a form on myGov — call Services Australia if unclear. Every year on the wrong payment costs $6,000+.
PP partnered vs JobSeeker — no rate difference, but eligibility matters
For partnered claimants, PP and JobSeeker pay the same rate ($719/fortnight each). The difference:
- PP partnered — youngest child under 6, principal carer, lighter obligations
- JobSeeker partnered — no age restriction on kids, standard obligations
If your youngest is under 6 and you're the principal carer, PP is easier to maintain. Once the youngest turns 6, you switch to JobSeeker automatically.
Are you eligible for PP single?
All of these have to be true:
- Single (not in a couple relationship). If your relationship status changes, notify Services Australia within 14 days — a couple relationship reclassifies you to PP partnered (or JobSeeker if youngest is 6+).
- Principal carer of a child under 8. "Principal carer" means the child is primarily in your care (not the other parent's). Shared-care arrangements affect eligibility based on the percentage of care.
- Australian resident (with any relevant NARWP satisfied).
- Meet income and assets tests (income below cutoff — see below; assets below pension asset threshold).
- Meet mutual obligations — reduced for parents of pre-schoolers, more active once kids are school-age.
The income test — how PP single works
The tapers are more generous than JobSeeker.
| Fortnightly income | Reduction |
|---|---|
| $0 to $240.60 | No reduction — full payment |
| Above $240.60 | 40¢ per $1 |
| Extra free area per child after first | +$24.60/fortnight |
Example: single parent with 2 kids under 8 — free area is $240.60 + $24.60 = $265.20/fortnight. Earn $500/fn → $234.80 above free area → reduction is $93.92 → PP falls from $1,080.50 to ~$987/fortnight.
Cutoff — payment reaches $0: around $3,001/fortnight ($78k/year) for a single parent of 1 kid (higher for more kids). This is WAY higher than JobSeeker's cutoff (~$1,466/fn) — you can keep working meaningfully and still get some PP.
The income test — how PP partnered works
- Own income free area: $150/fortnight
- Own income taper: 60¢ per $1 above (same as JobSeeker)
- Partner income free area: $1,345/fortnight
- Partner income taper: 60¢ per $1 above
Partnered PP doesn't get the extra-generous single tapers — it's essentially JobSeeker with a different name.
Stacking with other payments — the real cash picture
Most PP recipients also qualify for:
- Family Tax Benefit A (FTB-A) — per-child payment, income-tested. Typical single-parent-with-1-kid amount: $6,000–$8,000/year.
- Family Tax Benefit B (FTB-B) — single parents automatically qualify (no partner income test to fail). Typical: $4,700/year.
- Rent Assistance — if you rent privately. Up to $211/fortnight for a single with 1 child ($5,486/year).
- Energy Supplement — small automatic top-up (a few dollars per fortnight).
Real annual cash for a single parent of 1 kid on PP + private rental:
| Payment | Annual |
|---|---|
| Parenting Payment (single) | $28,093 |
| FTB-A | ~$6,000 |
| FTB-B | ~$4,700 |
| Rent Assistance | ~$5,486 |
| Energy Supplement | ~$220 |
| Total | ~$44,500 |
Plus Child Care Subsidy if the kid's in daycare (typically 85–90% subsidy at these income levels — likely $10k+ of CCS on top).
What happens when the youngest turns 8 (single) or 6 (partnered)?
You transition to JobSeeker Payment. Rate drops by ~$233/fortnight (single) — about $6,000/year less.
How to prepare 6 months before the transition:
- Look at part-time work — even 2 days/week keeps your income up and softens the JobSeeker drop.
- Consider Austudy if you'd study full-time — same rate as JobSeeker but no job-search obligation.
- If your child has ongoing high-care needs (disability, chronic illness), you may qualify for Carer Payment instead of JobSeeker — same rate as PP single ($1,048.10/fortnight) with a different eligibility path.
- If you're 45+ at the transition, you get some extra help via Job Ready — a training + wage subsidy program specifically for older parents returning to work.
Set a reminder for your child's 7th birthday (single) or 5th birthday (partnered) — call Services Australia to talk through the transition BEFORE the payment automatically drops. Some options (Carer Payment, Austudy) need to be applied for.
How to claim
- Set up myGov and link Services Australia.
- Start your Parenting Payment claim at my.gov.au.
- Upload documents — birth certificate for youngest child, ID, bank statements, income evidence, housing (for RA).
- Update relationship status if changed — critical because it drives whether you're on PP single vs PP partnered.
- Report income fortnightly even if $0.
